Community Planning
Initiatives and Projects

The Planning Department works with other departments and agencies on special projects that implement recommendations of the Comprehensive Plan or provide opportunity to improve the quality of life within the County.  For example, staff from the Planning Department, Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism and the Department of Information Technology are working with staff from Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission on a Rural Transportation Grant to explore the possibility of providing a bicycle-pedestrian trail between the Courthouse area and Beaverdam Park. The Planning staff has also worked with the Historic Preservation Commission to provide research and recommendations regarding the section of the Zoning Ordinance related to historic resources.

In addition to County initiated projects, the Planning staff participates in and encourages community based planning initiatives such as the Colonial Courthouse Village Enhancement Project, Gloucester Gateway Committee (Gloucester Point redevelopment), Historical Preservation Commission, Dragon Run Special Area Management Plan (SAMP), and others.  Staff provides expertise, technical assistance, resources, research, and background materials to these community or advisory groups as well as acts as liaison between these groups and the Planning Commission and/or Board of Supervisors.
