Millennials Are Taking Over The Workforce

By the end of 2020, Millennials (those born between 1980 and 2000), are forecast to comprise half (50%) of the American workforce.

  • Millennials are more likely than other generations to buy products from a company that gives to charity or to recommend that business to a friend.
  • While just 54% of Millennials get to contribute to charitable causes in their workplace, 77% of those who do, have taken full advantage of it.
    • 40% have followed or taken an active interest in a charitable cause through their employer.
    • 30% became an active volunteer or organizer.
    • 30% made regular donations through their employer.
    • 23% did fundraising through sponsorship or by organizing collections and events.
  • Millennials give more goods and time than any other generation.
  • They're slowly making the United States more charitable overall.
  • 84% of Millennials give to charitable organizations. That’s a higher percentage than Baby Boomers and Gen X’s.
  • Millennials were the most likely (60%) of any generation to have donated to hurricane relief after Harvey, Irma and Maria.
  • 61% of Millennial parents have talked about charity with their children in the past year, and they are introducing their children to more types of charity than other parents.

New National and Virginia Value of Volunteer Time Announced

The Independent Sector has released a new Value of Volunteer Time of $25.43 an hour nationally and $27.50 an hour in Virginia. This value is calculated each year to show the economic impact of volunteers on our economy. Just like a check or a pledge card, volunteers are a vital resource that help nonprofits deliver on their mission. Board members, committee members, and community volunteers contribute in unimaginable ways.

Nonprofit Finance Team Survival Guide is a field guide for navigating the complexity and demands of nonprofit financial management.

Tips for Stress-Free Volunteer Supervision will increase the likelihood that staff members view volunteers as a way to ease their workload, not add to it.

Raising Volunteers: Involving Children and Their Families
Faye C. Roberts examines the importance of involving children and teens in the volunteer experience and explores ways to introduce children and teens to volunteering. Because reaching children also means reaching their parents, it identifies frequently suggested approaches to family-oriented volunteering for different age groups. By examining what appeals to parents, you may be able to find ways your organization can reach families, involve youth, and help encourage the volunteers of tomorrow.

Grant Gopher Database Search Tip!

Are you looking for grants to support projects in the classroom? You'll find those types of grants in our "Education" category. This category is for all grants related to in-school K-12 and higher education programs.

• Select your state and county • Select the Education program area • Use the keyword classroom

These types of grants are usually offered via a bi-annual or annual grant cycle so you might not see something available for you now, but keep checking in. Pro users receive an email alert when new grants matching their saved searches are added or updated. Not only that, but they're often notified well in advance of the cycle being open (as soon as we have the dates confirmed), which really helps with the grant planning process. Happy searching!
